Inside Tips to Exchange Money in Tokyo

• Most ATMs in Japan do not have a service charge for MasterCard/Cirrus debit cards, but they have a small one for Visa/Plus debit cards.
• 7-Bank charges ¥108 for withdrawals up to ¥10,000, and ¥216 above that for Visa/Plus debit cards.
• Visa and MasterCard, and not the ATM, determine the exchange rate you’ll get. (Googling “Visa exchange rates” for example will lead you to Visa’s page where you can see the current rates.)
• Some banks (JP Bank, at the post office), offer “DCC” (dynamic currency conversion), which allow you to select to have your card charged in yen or your country’s currency, and it will show you the exchange rate on the screen. ALWAYS choose to be charged in yen. In over 26 countries I’ve been offered DCC, it has never once been to my advantage. Usually, there is a 3-5% markup for this.
• 7-Bank allows for a max of ¥100,000 per withdrawal. This is not per day, it’s per transaction. Your own bank may have a lower daily withdrawal limit; if you don’t know what it is, ask before you leave.
• Your own bank may also charge you both a fee for using another bank’s ATM and a foreign transaction fee. If it does, *shop for another bank.* (In the US I recommend a checking account with Charles Schwab – not only do they not charge fees, but they also refund me any fees I’m charged by the ATM – so I’ll get back that ¥108 service charge I paid for the withdrawal in the screenshot below.)
• Most standard Japanese banks DO NOT allow transactions with foreign cards; for this, you’ll need to use ATMs in convenience stores or at any post office nationwide. You can hardly walk more than 4 minutes in any large city without seeing a convenience store (or 5!) so there’s no real need to be concerned about locating ATMs.
• Every international airport has ATMs that work with foreign cards. There’s no need at all to get foreign currency before you leave.
• Unless your bank has told you otherwise, inform them of your international travel before you leave so your card won’t be blocked overseas as suspected fraud.

Exchange money in another country that is always difficult and challenging but in Tokyo, it’s very easy and reliable. Hope our guide about the best place to exchange currency in Tokyo will help you get the best exchange rate.
